From the Tribute speech delivered at the induction of D. R. and Isla
Miller into Sarasota's Ring Of Fame in January, 1995:
"The way D.R. and Isla Miller lived their lives"
16 STEPS TO CIRCUS SUCCESS
- Never miss a payday.
- Don't spend money you don't have. Next season might be bad.
Next week might be bad.
- Don't ever expect your employees to do anything for you that you
personally wouldn't do for them.
- Eat in the cookhouse. Clean your plate. Thank the cook...and the
dishwasher.
- Smile at the performers. They will smile back. They might even
smile at the audience.
- Tell your people that they do a good job. Tell them even if they
don't speak the same language. They will understand and do a better job.
- Give your people the freedom to make their own mistakes. And the time
to correct them.
- Listen to other people's ideas. Really listen to other people's ideas.
- When something goes wrong, it is your own fault. Take the blame. When
something goes right it is due to the hard work of everyone. Share the
rewards.
- When you make a deal, stick to it. If it is a bad deal, learn from it.
But don't resent the person with whom you made the deal.
- When you poke fun at someone...when you laugh at someone's mistakes...
when you gossip about someone, make sure that that particular someone is
you.
- Visit people when they are injured or sick. Ask people how their
parents are doing. Tell them how pretty their kids are. Mean it.
- Protect your family, friends, and employees. They, in turn, will
protect you.
- Love and trust your friends and family. Completely. Without doubt or
hesitation. Be honest with them.
- Love life. Overlook your problems and look for solutions. Laugh a lot.
- A friend is more important than a dollar.
